Five new members were elected to the BikeHouston board at the Annual Meeting of Houston’s organization that advocates making the city safe and accessible for cyclists.

The new members elected January 26, 2010, are
Aaron Chang; Darren Sabom; Joel Bloom, Ph.D.; Tom Compson; and Tom Wurth. The new members replace outgoing board members Kat Baumeister, David Dick, Jackie Friedman, Regina Garcia and Woody Speer who had served for six years and were term limited by the by-laws of the organization.

Speer, the outgoing chair, opened the meeting by outlining the helmet donations and bike education events supported by BikeHouston. For 2010, BikeHouston priorities are completion of the City of Houston Bikeway Project, seeking full accommodation of bicycles on Metro rail and passage of a Safe Passing ordinance by the City of Houston.

In her keynote speech, Gina Mitteco, Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator, for Houston Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) outlined the Regional Bikeway Plan. She said H-GAC uses four strategies to improve mobility for cyclists. These strategies involve regional corridors, special districts, livable centers and optimization of all transportation investments to improve the quality of bicycling in the Houston area.

Robin Stallings, executive director from BikeTexas, gave a legislative update as well as highlights from BikeTexas, the state advocacy group. Special guests included Dan Raine, Houston Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Houston.

Baumeister presented the financial report for the year ending December, 2009. The meeting was preceded by a reception hosted by El Meson restaurant.
