Response for City on bike trails - 2006/02/11 01:22
I wrote to a few city representatives related to Bicycling's magazine listing Houston as one of the worst cycling cities. Specifically, I mentioned certain bike lanes that aren't maintained, bike lanes that have been abandoned for road expansions, and the issue with Metro. Here is a response from CM Lawrence's office:
Mr. XXXX,
Thank you for contacting CM Lawrence regarding the recent edition of Bicycling Magazine. You raise very significant and thoughtful questions on the direction of our bicycle program.
In a perfect world, the City of Houston would have unlimited resources to develop a bike system however; we have to balance the cost of such a system against providing basic services such as police and fire protection, delivering clean drinking water, meeting our wastewater and sewer demands, collection of trash and refuse and developing and maintaining our streets.
I am referring your questions on providing bike racks on METRO busses to METRO as they are not a City entity, I am also forwarding your broader comments to the Bicycle - Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Houston Bikeway Program, Ms. Lillibeth Andre for her review.
Again, thank you for contacting CM Lawrence and be assured she will keep your views in mind as the issue comes before the Houston City Council.
Respectfully,
Darrin Hall Senior Aide Council Member Toni Lawrence, District A 713.247.2010 (p) 713.247.1858 (f)
