Dream question: where to live? - 2006/08/18 16:54 Hi all,
I am moving to Houston this fall from the Boston area. I currently cycle everywhere and that is one thing that I realize may need some augmentation with my move. That being said, I would like to continue to commute to work by bicycle and need to figure out how, where, and when. This is something I feely pretty strongly about, enough so that it can influence my choice of living location.
So my question is, if you were commuting downtown everyday, where would be the best place to live (all else being equal, which I know it isn't....) within 10 or so miles that would make your commute to work optimal, as well as be a pleasant area of town. I know little about the Houston areas, but am quickly learning. I ride now ~ 7 per direction with hills and such, so I am targeting around 10 safe miles in Houston (20 round). Any ideas or thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance and see you soon!
Yours Truly,
Chris

Re:Dream question: where to live? - 2006/08/24 17:10 i would say the heights area would be the best bet. between I-10 and the North Loop 610 and west of I-45. Heights Blvd has a wide bike/transit lane that takes you to both Memorial Drive and Allen Parkway. both of these streets are the main arteries into downtown that are not highways. if you go the opposite way on memorial, it will take you to the memorial park where there is a large recreational bike trail. the heights is also a historic restoration distric so you can find either a fixer-upper, a remodeled place or a new town home that a developer has put up. if you are looking on the har.com site it would be the area number 9 or if it is listed in craigslist, it will likely say "Heights".

Re:Dream question: where to live? - 2006/09/02 06:44 We have lived on the SW side for 16 years now - around
Braeswood/Fondren area. Maplewood West/Maplewood/Meyerland neighborhoods are within a mile of this and all are very close to Braeswood. The Braeswood Bayou follows this road and has a nice concrette trail that runs along side it. We ride it every week for commuting and for fun on the weekends. It will get you to Rice Univ. and Univ. of Houston rather easily (U of H is within 11 miles from that intersection mentioned earlier. Downtown is about another 3-4 miles further. Though it is a bit more than you were looking for, it is a nice area to live - we have enjoyed it and real estate is fairly affordable in the area compared to some other properties inside the 610 Loop (which is just about3 miles away). Hopefully, this doesn't confuse the issue too much and good luck on your move!
