What is this forum? - 2003/04/21 19:46 This forum is created to remember those who have had their lives cut short while riding their bicycle on the streets and trails of Houston.

Bicycling is not necessarily a dangerous activity, and this forum is not designed to scare you from riding your bike. Houston is not necessarily worse than any other city. The causes of bicycle crashes and fatalities are many. Although it is tempting to speculate, we rarely have enough information to truly know what happened. And even if we did, the purpose of this forum is NOT to find fault.

At the same time, honoring the memory of the fallen may also include trying to prevent similar tragedies in the future. For this reason, BikeHouston believes in the importance of the three E's:

Education- cyclists and motorists frequently are ignorant of the laws and practices that will keep them safe.

Enforcement- laws that help protect cyclists must be enforced. Motorists wield a deadly weapon and must be held accountable for their negligeant actions. At the same time, laws that require compliance by cyclists, such as riding on the right with traffic and using a headlight at night should not be ingored by law enforcement.

Engineering- ALL public facilities on which bicyclists are permitted to ride (everything except controlled-access freeways) must be designed, built and maintained in such a fashion that they safely accomodate bicyclists
