How to ride a bike? - 2008/07/22 14:39
An email we got recently:
"Hello there, I was curious whether you guys hold lessons on how to ride a bike for adults. I'm a bit ashamed that I've not learned as a child, and I really would like to reap the many benefits from learning to do so."
Our reply:
Our Bike Education classes are for people who can ride a bike, however, it's not hard to learn.
Get a bike that you can stand over, and a pedal wrench. Most any thin 15mm wrench will work. Remove the pedals (the left one is reverse threaded). Lower the seat all the way. When you sit on the seat, both feet will be flat on the ground. Go to a deserted parking lot, and just scoot around on the bike, pushing yourself along with your feet. Treat it exactly like a scooter. Learn how to feels to go straight, and to make turns, and finally set up a slalom course for yourself with paper cups, etc, and run through the slalom course. A slight downhill helps. Also practice using the hand brakes, both front and rear.
After you are really secure and comfortable zooming around on the pedal-less bike, you put the pedals on, and incorporate pedaling into the rest of the balancing act. Do not use any type of training wheel. Training wheels will destroy the learning path to learning the balancing skills. Good luck.
Sincerely, Peter Wang, LCI
