Driver returns to, flees fatal bike accident scene
A bicyclist was killed northeast of Houston late Friday by a driver who returned and shined the vehicle's headlights on the injured man before driving away, investigators said.
Arthur Mattox Jr., 60, of the 800 block of Autumnwood Drive in Houston, died at Ben Taub Hospital, according to a report by the Harris County Sheriff's Department.
Mattox was hit around 10:30 p.m. by a white Ford Explorer or white truck as he rode his bicycle on the right side of the road in the 2200 block of Lauder near Aldine Westfield, sheriff's investigators said. Witnesses said the white truck, traveling in the same direction on Lauder, struck Mattox and kept going.
Witnesses told investigators the truck then turned around and returned to the scene, where the driver shined the vehicle's headlights on the injured bicyclist. The vehicle then fled westbound on Lauder.
