AASHTO says 8'-12' wide, you want it wider if you have very dense population and are designing for a full mix of 'traffic': peds, strollers, bicyclists and in particular, rollerbladers, who need more horizontal space for propulsion. H-GAC has ped-bike guidelines that call out these features.
Less than 8 feet don't work: riders/pedestrians swap paint/make contact low comfort level/collisions.
