290 HOV lane - 2005/06/27 12:50 Have you noticed that the HOV lane on 290 is always empty on Sundays? I propose that the lane be opened strictly for bicycle traffic on Sundays. METRO Park & Ride lots are always empty and could easily accommodate cyclists.

Imagine riding from the West rd METRO Park & Ride lot all the way to the I-610 loop and back without a single light or intersection to interrupt your rhythm. The bridges and overpasses would only add to the workout experience.

There would be no implementation costs and safety guaranteed by the barrier walls already in place. All entrances have a lever arm to keep cars from entering, riders could simply slide underneath or wiggle through the sides of the swing arm.

There you have it, Instant bike path.
What do you think?

290 HOV lane - 2005/07/01 08:51 You can ask all you want, they won't do it !

But, it's much more scenic to park at the Pinemont lot and ride down White Oak Bayou...

Re:290 HOV lane - 2005/08/04 16:58 Cyclists:

I am starting a team which will focus on getting some sort of useable bicycle / pedestrian infrastructure installed as part of the Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway) corridor rebuild project.

I really think that if a dedicated group of citizens doesn't get involved early in the process (right now), then the chance that something will just spontaneously show up for cyclists and pedestrians are just about like the chances of a snowstorm in Houston in August.

Whereas, if we get involved now, we have some chance of getting something useable put it... realize that "something useable" may not make everyone happy. If it's a multi-use trail, that won't be optimum for fast, experienced cyclist. If it's an on-street bike lane, that won't make beginner riders and parents of children happy. Not everyone is going to be happy.

But the goal here is just to get something done in an intelligent manner, because something done right is better than nothing.

This is a long term effort; contracts are not projected to be let until 2009. There will be long stretches (months) of nothing happening, punctuated by infrequent episodes of sheer terror, as public meetings are announced with little or no advance warning, or "Frankenstein" plans come to light and have to be battled against.

Anticipate that meetings will be at inconvenient times, like during the work day... and that you will have to take time off to go to these meetings. This won't happen frequently, but when they happen, they will be very important.

I don't want to go into details about group activities via public internet... I need to talk to people interested in this effort over the phone or face-to-face. Please call my office at (713) 513-2168 if you are interested in dedicating yourself to this effort, if I am not there please leave a message, I reply to all voicemails.

Re:290 HOV lane - 2005/09/27 22:12 I rode with Mayor White the other day and proposed just such an idea to him. On the surface, he liked it but there are some snags. Weekends are for maintenance. WOuld not be much fun cresting a hill and hitting a truck head on. There would be a lot of coordination as well. Metro oversees the lanes and they are governed federally.

I try to sell him on it by having a "Bike to Downtown Day" in conjuction with one of those downtown festivals. Open the HOV lanes for bike traffic on a Sunday or Saturday.

Write him and your councilmember. It cant hurt.
