Where are some places to ride in West Houston? - 2006/03/27 05:31 I just like to get out and go for a spin. Nothing rigorus, just feeling the breeze blow by? Is Terry Hershey a good ride? How about the Barker Cypress levee? Thanks!

Re:Where are some places to ride in West Houston? - 2006/03/27 18:38 Hershey park can be a pleasant ride, but be careful. The great problem that I've found there is the unpredictability of roller bladers, family cyclists, joogers, etc. At peak traffic times (weekend afternoons, etc.), it can get a bit hairy. That said, when there's less traffic, it's really pleasant on a hybrid or comfort bike. I wouldn't recommend it for roadie stuff, but it is enjoyable.

If you're looking for some roadwork, there are a lot of groups that ride out of West Oaks and Katy Mills on Saturday and Sunday mornings, starting around 8:00 a.m. I've often hooked up with other riders just by going out there at the right time. West Oaks is getting a lot more car traffic these days than it ever used to, but I still think it's a good ride. I haven't done Katy Mills in a while, but I recall it as being pretty good, and there are some excellent cyclists who ride out there just about every weekend. Nice folks, and they're happy to have you tag along.

TH is a good trail to "just feeling the breeze blow by". Be prepared to share the trail with other slower users.

The new 4-mile trail along Barker Dam from Briar Forest to Barker Cypress Road is less crowded and suitable for higher speed cyclists. This new trail connects to TH about 1 mile North of Briar Forest.

Yes it's a good ride. They've recently adopted a new rule in the park and put up signs - 10mph Speed Limit when passing pedestrians. They are enforcing it.
