safest route into/out of downtown - 2006/05/08 19:09 Hi all - just wondering if anyone has suggestions for entering/exiting downtown (specifically to the Lamar/Louisiana area) from the Northwest (Heights). According to the bike map online, it looks like Washington to Preston/Congress is marked as a bike lane, but that doesn't always mean that it's the safest/best route to take. Thanks!

Re:safest route into/out of downtown - 2006/05/08 19:10 Sorry, I meant to also mention that I'm specifically worried about rush hour times, not necessarily early morning/late evening. Planned commute time will be in the 7:00-8:00am and 4:00-5:00pm time frame.

Re:safest route into/out of downtown - 2006/06/04 23:43 I haven't ridden Washington in awhile, but my memory is that the so-called bike lane usually has parked cars in it. Also, the pavement was in poor condition, forcing you to ride in the car lane.

Alternative to Washington would be Center Street (1 block north).

Another way into downtown from the Heights would be to take 6th/White Oak to Houston Avenue and head downtown from there. I've never done it during rush, and would suggest driving it first.

Re:safest route into/out of downtown - 2006/08/03 14:46 Hi,

I have ridden the bayou trail, such as it out, out of downtown, then I cross over on the pedestrian-only bridge at Jackson Hill St. (Cleveland Park). Works well for me, and I get to visit the bats!

Re:safest route into/out of downtown - 2006/08/24 17:43 i take heights down and then get on the left side of the road before crossing washington, usually riding on the sidewalks so as not to upset the right of way in the bike/transit lanes. keep going south on the sidewalks until you go over memorial and get almost to allen parkway. there will be an entrance to enter the buffalo bayou park - you simply go down the hill to the trail. follow the trail towards downtown. you can either go up the steep hill after the disc golf course and get on sabine or stay on the art park trail. there are many exits from the trail to downtown streets from there, but it ends up around prarie or preston. if you don't want to ride through the park you can keep going past the entrance to the park and take the sidewalks along allen parkway.
