Safe route from Westheimer/Fondren to Meyerland - 2006/12/28 22:25 I was wondering what the best route would be to get from Westheimer and Lazy Hollow (in between Dunvale and Fondren) and Braeswood and the West Loop. I am hoping to be able to commute to work and back and while there are bike routes I know that the routes are not always as safe as some of the less known neighborhood streets.

I bought my bike just the other day at Planetary Cycles and rode down Braeswood on the trail to my office building at Braeswood and the West Loop,

through the parking lot (Aramco Building) and then on the sidewalk down the West Loop to Beechnut,

down Beechnut to Rice and then about a block and then through a neighborhood, and then to Chimney Rock,

Down Chimney Rock about 2 blocks and then Bellaire to Renwick which I knew to have a bike lane,

then crossed under SW Freeway and took the first left, I think it might have been Windswept, and rode on it to Unity and then crossed Hillcroft into a neighborhood to Stoney Brook. From there I crossed the street and went down Westheimer on the sidewalk to Lazy Hollow. Westheimer is scary. Any better suggestions?

Re:Safe route from Westheimer/Fondren to Meyerland - 2007/01/04 02:55 When you leave work you may want to stay on the Brays Trail until you get to Chimney Rock. Cross Chimney Rock, stay on the north side of the Brays Bayou and ride on the hard dirt for a few hundred yards until you get to Braesmont. You’ll see a METRO bus shelter and head north on the bike route to Carew (one block south of Beechnut). Turn left (west) on Carew to Renwick. Another modification would be to cut through the neighborhoods once you get west of 610 on the Brays Trail and ride west on Jason to Braesmont. Unfortunately that’s the best part of your commute. Ride north on Renwick just like you’ve done as I’ve got no good ideas after that. I think the tollroad wiped out the bike lane on Westpark to Dunvale. I think you may have turned on Skyline or Fairdale lane to go west. You’ve got to either take Richmond or Westheimer to go west both of which are tough. Good Luck!
