HOUSTON -- A teenager was shot to death on a southeast Houston bike trail in broad daylight Wednesday (3/12/08), KPRC Local 2 reported.
Jonathan Balles said he was playing with his 2-year-old daughter when the teen was killed just feet from his house on Super Street.
"Sitting on my front porch, I had just got off work when I heard gunshots down the street," said Balles. "Then I heard some more. I walked over and at first didn't see the body, then I saw him shot on the floor."
He ran to help.
"I told him just breathe, just breathe," said Balles.
He called 911.
"It was horrible," said Balles. "I kept telling them to hurry up. His face was turning white and it didn't look like he would make it any longer."
Police said the victim was one of two teenagers walking on the bike trail at about 5:30 p.m. when he was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Investigators said the teens may have been armed as well, and possibly shot back.
Police said they do not have a motive for the shooting or any suspects, but they believe they found the shooter's vehicle just a few blocks away with bullet holes in the side.
Neighbors said they are worried because the bike path is a popular place.
"This is just getting out of control," said Jessica Hulsey, who lives in the area.
"My friend was out there with his family," said resident Jose Ortiz.
"They always walk up and down here," said Balles. "My daughter plays on the trail."
People living at a senior home nearby were scared too, according to neighbors.
"They're afraid. It's happening too close. It's happening too close to them." said Hulsey.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Houston Police Department at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
