New to Commuting - 2008/07/08 22:04 Due to rising gas prices I am getting myself ready to bike to work and school.

I am new to all of this and would love some help.

Anything is helpful from info on bikes to this i need to safety...anything.

I live just outside of the loop on the north west side, Hammerly Blvd and Wirt Rd to be exact in Spring Branch. I work either downtown or in the energy corridor (hwy 6 and i-10). And I attend U of H. Does anyone have any route suggestions?

Thanks everyone.

Re:New to Commuting - 2008/07/09 02:13 I'm not familiar with routes up north but check out this blog I just wrote. It has links to Houston maps & commuter sites you will find useful as a new commuter.

Good luck!

Re:New to Commuting - 2008/07/13 16:58 Because of the distances involved between your destinations (from UH to Katy Fwy and Hwy 6 with you sort of in the middle in Spring Branch) you really need to be thinking about using your bike and METRO in combination, or else you're going to be totally exhausted all of the time. Your bike is not a car... YOU are the engine!

www.ridemetro.org to check out bus maps and schedules.

There are a bunch of bike routes in SB. Here's the system map:

There are some buses that run along Memorial Drive that go east and west. The #131 will put you to Downtown or put you to Hwy 6 and Memorial. From both of those places it's nuthin' to bike ride to your final destinations.

Use front AND rear lights at night! Light colored or reflective clothing items! A helmet! Ride with traffic!
