Got Tips for a New Commuter? - 2008/09/25 19:49 I've been bike commuting since May 2008 - fairly new - 10 miles each way from Garden Oaks Area to Downtown.

I've had several near brushes with cars, despite trying to be really, really careful - assuming that just because I'm doing the right thing, doesn't mean cars see me, etc.

On Monday, I was happily riding in the (very nice) bike lane on Heights. A truck turned from the left lane right in front of me (usually, they pull into the right-side bike lane and then turn). I tried stopping, he tried stopping, but too late - I bounced off his bumber and slid across the intersection.

Just some road rash - although I'm sure it looked VERY dramatic. Of course, after I pulled my bike shorts back up - I first checked on my bike - it didn't suffer too much damage thank goodness!

The driver was very nice - people stopped to help. All ended fine.

Anywho - what tips can you more experienced commuters offer? I looked at the bike safety video on this site. I was thinking of getting a light, or maybe one of those orange flags on a pole? Goofy, but if it works, I'll try it.

Thanks!

Re:Got Tips for a New Commuter? - 2008/09/26 05:28 I've been commuting by bike for about 7 years, but only 2 in Houston. It's so different here from any other city I've ever lived in when it comes to commuting by bike. The attitude of the motorists, the condition of the roads, the lack of bike-friendly routes...It is definitely the least welcoming city I've ever seen from the point of view of a bicycle communter.

I think it's a terrific idea to take a safety course. I wish I could myself, but none of them ever fit into my schedule, since I work on the weekends and evenings.

My tip for you probably sounds obvious, but you've got to be hypervigilant when you ride. Be super aware and paranoid about every vehicle around you. I also highly recommend multiple very bright, blinking lights for visibility and to be able to see, too (especially since the power is out in much of the Heights right now).

As scary as commuting here in Houston can be, I'd still never want to do it any other way.

See you on Heights Blvd! I ride there a lot, too.
