Before breakfast loop downtown - 2004/09/15 15:36 Recipe for avoiding Houston traffic:

1. Arise at 5:15 am.
2. Get on bike by 5:30.
3. From the Memorial/Chimney Rock area, ride on Memorial east toward downtown.
4. Exit Memorial at Shepard south to Allen Parkway.
5. Ride the Parkway into downtown.
6. After going under I45, take a left on Bagby and ride north to Franklin.
7. Left on Franklin, which becomes Washington after the light at ???, and ride all the way west on Washington till you get to Wescott.
8. Cross Wescott onto Arnot, and continue until you hit the Memorial Park golf course loop.
9. At the park you'll have the option of riding the golf course loop (3 miles) to add some miles to your ride, or just heading south to Memorial Drive again, turning right and riding on west to Chimney Rock.
10. This is about an 18-mile ride, and by adding loops you can get in 20-25 and be done by about 7 am.

This is a great ride because: first, the roads all are mostly junk- and pothole-free; second, the ride through Memorial Park is always a few degrees cooler; third, you see parts of Houston that during the day you don't have time to appreciate because you're dodging cars; and fourth, you can do all this before 7 am and coast for the rest of the day.
