Riding from NW to Sugar Land - 2005/09/06 17:50 I rode from NW Harris County (State Highway 6 @ FM-529) to Sugar Land early on Labor Day. Here's the route.

SH 6 from FM-529 to just south of I-10... this is a tough stretch, requires lots of vehicular cycling skills, and I would not attempt it during periods of heavy traffic or at night or in the rain. The right lane is wide, it may even be as wide as 14 ft, but since the traffic is going at 50 MPH, you need to be going 20 MPH to keep the differential down to a reasonable level.

SH 6 from I-10 to Boss Gaston (Old Richmond Rd)... fortunately, there is a wide shoulder along this stretch. The problem is that there are frequent right-turn-only lanes that have to be navigated.

It is possible to avoid the big bridge over the Westpark Tollway. Proceed on the surface, traffic is controlled by lights. CAUTION - on the east side of SH 6 under the bridge, watch out for Tollway off/on ramps!

When you get to Boss Gaton / Old Richmond, turn left (east). Turn right on Burney Rd, and go all the way down Burney until you get almost to US 90A. It will change into Main St. JUST BEFORE US 90A, take a right (west) on Kempner St, this is a better way than US 90A to get to Brooks St. Proceed on Kempner for 215 yards, then left (south) on Brooks. Brooks turns into First Colony Blvd., and crosses over US 59 on a no-pedestrians bridge, so you have to take the lane and go fast up this bridge.

As my destination was across from First Colony Mall, I turned left at Lexington, and I was there.

25 miles. Action-packed.
