Harris County On-Road Bike Policy - 2007/11/24 16:01
Here's a little gem I found in my archived emails. I think we can sum up the County's on-road bike policy as follows:
"If we don't build it, we hope they don't come. But if them come anyway and get killed or injured, we still won't do anything about it."

Dear Mr. Wang,
Thank you for taking the time for making Precinct Three aware of the bicycle access and safety issues that concern you...
....In regards to your last request to clearly mark all bike lanes, Precinct Three does not maintain any major roadways officially designated as bicycle lanes. Precinct Three's official position, shared by the Harris County Public Infrastructure Department and other Precincts, is that bike lanes on roadways designed to accommodate the safe movement of passenger vehicles and trucks are not the appropriate location for the majority of bicyclists...
Sincerely,
Paul Hawkins, P.E. Assistant Manager of Engineering Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Steve Radack paul_hawkins@co.harris.tx.us 281-463-6300
