Starbucks - 2008/01/31 13:13 The new CEO, Howard Schultz, is trying to get his hands around the faltering sales picture, so I wrote him a letter today via starbucks.com

----------------------------

I've seen some stories in the paper about how Mr. Howard Schultz wants to restore the coffeeshop experience. These stories reminded me of one really irritating thing.

None of your stores here in Houston that I have seen have bicycle racks! Here we are, deep in the global warming and energy crises, and you are building elaborate, expensive suburban-style drive-throughs, just like McDonalds, in order to serve lazy people in their belching Hummers, yet you won't spend $500 on a bike rack to serve the alternative crowd who want to save the planet by riding bikes, and who actually want to walk into the stores on two legs and add to the ambience by being there, being human, and drinking coffee.

I have been to other coffeeshops in Houston that have bike racks. I prefer those places.

Stop imitating McDonalds! Stop trying to be suburban! No one is going to care to go to your places any longer if you forget your Seattle roots and build locations that look and feel like Wal-Mart... sprawling suburban concrete box architecture surrounded by a sea of parking.
