Does the City want me to ride or what? /HPD Honker - 2008/09/05 06:27
I started riding my bike to work during the "Ride Your Bike to Work Day" sponsored by the City of Houston. Ever since, I've been riding 2 or 3 days a week - Garden Oaks area to Downtown - about 10 miles each way. It has been great.
Except for a few things.
One today - I was on Yale (one of the few streets on my route that DOES NOT have a bike lane). It was about 6:40. As usual, I hug the curb and cars generally go around me. Except, this one guy got right up on my tail and HONKED. Cheese & crackers, dude - what the heck!?
I ignored him, hoping my lack of response wouldn't be fun and he'd just go on.
Then, I heard the loudspeaker - GET OUT OF THE WAY BEFORE YOU GET KILLED. Oh. It was an HPD cruiser. Fine. I pulled up on the sidewalk. He passed me. Then I got back on the street.
He drove down the street, did a u-turn, but didn't stop me. I thought he'd think I was being defiant - I wasn't. I just was trying to get home, save gas, be green and follow the example of our Dear Mayor when he sponsored the Ride Your Bike to Work Day in May.
So - does the City want me to ride my bike to work or what? Was it just the one day?
Thanks for letting me rant.
Ride on!
