Got Tips for a New Commuter? - 2008/09/25 20:49
I've been bike commuting since May 2008 - fairly new - 10 miles each way from Garden Oaks Area to Downtown.
I've had several near brushes with cars, despite trying to be really, really careful - assuming that just because I'm doing the right thing, doesn't mean cars see me, etc.
On Monday, I was happily riding in the (very nice) bike lane on Heights. A truck turned from the left lane right in front of me (usually, they pull into the right-side bike lane and then turn). I tried stopping, he tried stopping, but too late - I bounced off his bumber and slid across the intersection.
Just some road rash - although I'm sure it looked VERY dramatic. Of course, after I pulled my bike shorts back up - I first checked on my bike - it didn't suffer too much damage thank goodness!
The driver was very nice - people stopped to help. All ended fine.
Anywho - what tips can you more experienced commuters offer? I looked at the bike safety video on this site. I was thinking of getting a light, or maybe one of those orange flags on a pole? Goofy, but if it works, I'll try it.
Thanks!
