Re:Got Tips for a New Commuter? - 2008/09/26 06:28
I've been commuting by bike for about 7 years, but only 2 in Houston. It's so different here from any other city I've ever lived in when it comes to commuting by bike. The attitude of the motorists, the condition of the roads, the lack of bike-friendly routes...It is definitely the least welcoming city I've ever seen from the point of view of a bicycle communter.
I think it's a terrific idea to take a safety course. I wish I could myself, but none of them ever fit into my schedule, since I work on the weekends and evenings.
My tip for you probably sounds obvious, but you've got to be hypervigilant when you ride. Be super aware and paranoid about every vehicle around you. I also highly recommend multiple very bright, blinking lights for visibility and to be able to see, too (especially since the power is out in much of the Heights right now).
As scary as commuting here in Houston can be, I'd still never want to do it any other way.
See you on Heights Blvd! I ride there a lot, too.
