Somehow we need to change the way risk is measured in this country. We talk about the risk pedestrians, cyclists and motorists accept from others, but we rarely talk about the risk they present to others (unless the subjects of DUI, red light running, or speeding come up). Even a relatively safe motorist presents far more risk to others than a pedestrian or cyclist does. If we start presenting it that way people might start to catch on that more cycling and walking means safer streets. Most simply put: motorists kill 40,000+ a year; cyclists might kill one or two walkers a year; pedestrians kill none. -- Mighk Wilson Bicycle/Pedestrian Planner, Orlando, FL |
