On February 18, 1997, approximately 15 concerned citizens/cyclists spoke at the Hunters Creek Village (HCV) City Council Meeting. Dick Duntley, cyclist and consultant for Wilbur Smith Associates, presented an overview of the proposed Houston Comprehensive Bikeway routes showing HCV Council how Village participation would be cost-effective by tapping into the ISTEA funding earmarked for use on such projects.
Present conditions in HCV for cyclists are below standard. The bike ban on Village streets coupled with narrow and dangerous "bike and hike" pathways, could make HCV liable to injured cyclists and/or pedestrians. After hearing cyclists' concerns, including two village residents, Mayor Jack Howeth called for a task Force to look into the "pros and cons" of changing current bike policy and using ISTEA funding for new bike facilities. Council Member Jess Mason and cyclist/resident Cliff Chappell were assigned as initial Task Force participants. HABA and HBC members who voiced their concerns at the City Council meeting were heartened by this small ray of light in what has for years looked to be a hopeless situation. Letters to HCV Council and appearances at Council Meetings by concerned citizens and injured cyclists had previously fallen on deaf ears. Now is the time to act since we have their attention. HCV's City Council is far from convinced. If you have any information on conditions in HCV, especially if you reside within Village limit, please send your concerns in writing to Council Member Jess Mason, #1 Hunters Creek Place, Houston, TX 77024. |
