You ride a bicycle because it feels good. The air feels good on your body; even the rain feels good. The blood starts moving around your body, and pretty soon it gets to your head, and, glory be, your head feels good. You start noticing things. You look until you really see. You hear things, and smell things you never knew were there. You start whistling nice little original tunes to suit the moment. Words start getting caught in the web of poetry in your mind. And there's a nice feeling, too in knowing you're doing a fundamental life thing for yourself: transportation. -- Nicolas Johnson |

Mission
The mission of BikeHouston is to promote safe bicycling and to improve the quality of life in the Houston area.
Goals
Our goals are to:
- secure equitable access to regional facilities, lands and roads
- educate the public about rights and responsibilities of bicyclists
- promote public awareness of the personal and community benefits of cycling
We will do this by forming broad coalitions with individuals and groups wherever a common purpose can be found.
Objectives for 2008
This year's objectives are:
- Monitor trail construction along bayous, especially Braes and Buffalo as they undergo major renovations for flood control.
- Inclusion of bikes on Metro light rail at all times. BikeHouston seeks racks in each rail car that will accommodate multiple bikes while allowing easy access for other rail riders.
- Educating government leaders in the county that bikes serve as a legitimate method of transportation and all planning should include accommodation for cyclists.
- Ongoing education of cyclists through LAB certification.
- Helmets for kids completing safety courses.
- Safety Education: Special focus on educating the public to use lights for night time use of bicycles.
- Develop a close working relationship with the new City of Houston Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordinator expected to be named later this year.
