Bike Houston gets frequent requests for cycling education services that often go unanswered because there simply haven’t been enough active cycling instructors in the Houston area. We are proud to announce today that our Capacity for Education program just took its first major step toward ensuring that cycling education is available when needed in the Houston area.

With the support of Bike Houston, eight Houston area cyclists recently completed training to become League Cycling Instructors (LCIs). Our new LCIs are Steve Colvin, Herb Feins, Clark Martinson, Keith Mouton, Scott Newsom, Dan Raine, Donny Sanders, and Peter Wang.

Completing LCI training by the League of American Bicyclists certifies new instructors to teach Bike Ed classes to children and adults. Only experienced cyclists who have previously completed cycling education classes offered by the League of American Bicyclists can apply to become LCIs. When the application is approved, students are sent study materials and they have to pass a pretest to be invited to complete the classroom and on-the-bike portions of the training. LCI students have to demonstrate advanced vehicular cycling skills and their ability to teach these skills before earning their certification.

Bike Ed classes feature a core cycling curriculum developed by the experts at the League of American Bicyclists, so when you take a Bike Ed class from a certified LCI, you can be secure that the education you are receiving reflects the best training available.

Bike Ed classes focus on training cyclists in the knowledge and skills necessary to ride confidently and safely as a vehicular cyclist. The skills taught include rules of the road, bike handling skills, bicycle maintenance, even such topics as nutrition for cycling. These are things all cyclists can benefit from learning. Even skilled racers are frequently at a loss when they are confronted with some of the situations that skilled vehicular cyclists handle with ease. Bike Ed classes are also frequently modified to include instruction on special topics relevant to the students in the class such as such riding safely in charity rides and bicycle commuting. Teams preparing for the MS150 or other big group rides could definitely benefit from a Bike Ed class and some are already contracting with LCIs to provide the training they need.
