METRO is currently in the process of acquiring right of way for all the various bus rapid transit (BRT) and light rail (LR) projects around the Houston area. Now is the time to make METRO aware of our needs because once these transit stations and rail lines are built, there will be no retrofitting to accommodate cyclists. Some top discussion points with METRO:

  • Will the LR and BRT lines under construction be compatible with existing bicycle connectivity in the area? As cyclists we must first worry about METRO destroying current accessibility similar to what they did along the upper Brays trail in the Medical Center at the Fannin crossing. METRO should view this as an opportunity to increase easy bicycle access to transit centers and rail stops. METRO needs to realize that if you have poor bicycling connectivity to a transit center, bus stop or park and ride lot that installing a few bike racks does not make your facility bicycle friendly. In addition, adding highly secure weather-protected bicycle parking at transit stops will draw the maximum number of non-motorized users from surrounding neighborhoods.

  • Will METRO purchase LR cars with the intent to accommodate bicycles? Now is the time to plan for this. Progressive transit agencies plan for this by purchasing rail cars with specific areas within the interior to safely hang bikes from. Designated space would be superior to what we currently have on the Main St. LR line where bicyclists are permitted during off peak times but essentially have to stand and hold the brake to prevent the bike from becoming a missile down the aisle. This accommodation for bikes on the interior is as simple as adding it to the purchase order. METRO needs to plan for this.
  • Please make METRO aware of our needs as past history indicates that METRO ignores the needs of cyclists. Having bikes become mainstream with public transportation will increase cycling and lead to better cycling opportunities for all. Write to Mr. Frank Wilson CEO, METRO, 1900 Main St., P.O.
