From the Texas Bicycle Coalition: We did it! We Texans, both Republicans and Democrats,pulled together and called our Representatives in Washington, DC. They responded with a resounding "YES" vote in favor of the Transportation Enhancement program that funds 70% of all bicycle facilities nationwide. That means about $35 million per year for Texas bicycle facilities.
The U.S. House of Representatives cast a critical vote for bicycling today, September 5, 2003. By a vote of 327 to 90 , the House passed a bipartisan amendment to restore funding for the transportation enhancements program for fiscal year 2004. A special thanks should be given to Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Waco) who led the Texas Democrats and Rep. John Carter(R-Round Rock) who led the way for Texas Republicans in this fight. Stirring speeches in favor of the Petri - Olver amendment were made by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Dallas) and Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin).
Rep. John Culberson (R-Houston), spoke against the amendment and favored putting all the transportation money into highways. Congratulations to all and thank you again for making your voice heard. As you can see,our voice makes a difference! |
