Dozens of Texas cyclists including BikeHouston members, Twilight Freedman, Gail Wellenkamp and Gail Spann attended this year's Texas Bike Lobby Day, visiting 180 House and Senate offices members, urging members to vote for all of the pro-bicycle bills this session ( www.biketexas.org ) and emphasizing the importance of the Safe Passing Bill, SB 859. While these concerned cyclist sat observing in the Senate Gallery, Senator Rodney Ellis D-Houston acknowledged their participation in the Texas political process, related his fresh experience riding from Houston to Austin for the BP MS 150, and expressed his gratitude for the work of Texas Bicycle Coalition. Senator Bob Deuell R-Greenville then spoke to his fellow senators about his experience as a former bicycle racer and his recent participation in the MS 150. Thanking Senator Ellis for his support of the bicycle community, his work to make Texas a better place for biking, and the potential for Safe Passing Bill (SB 859) to save lives, Senator Deuell joined Senator Ellis as one of four Senate Sponsors of SB 859.
Advocates Pose outside Capitol Cyclists in Suits was a great success. The response from almost all of the offices was extremely positive and the participants handed out thousands of neon bike pins making cycling a visible presence for the day. The State Capitol area had been totally transformed with the arrival of the BP MS 150, and people inside noticed. Several of our delegation had completed this journey, and their success was appreciated and admired by all.
The group made an impact at a crucial time. SB 859 will save cyclists' lives, but it must first become law. Please contact your Senator and Representative, ask them for their support of the bill, and thank them for their hard work. Contact Texas Bicycle Coalition with questions regarding the bicycle legislation that is currently working in the Capitol and what you can do to help. |
