Ray A. Jones (West Alabama QOL Coalition) and Dan Lundeen spoke before City Council today regarding plans to remove the bike lanes today (October 1, 2002). Mayor Brown and Council Members were not at all enthusiastic.
Ray spoke first. CM Goldberg said no one is using the bike lanes and asked what those 4000 poor motorists were going to do when the Spur 527 is closed down for reconstruction. Ray shot back that maybe they didn't need any sidewalks either because nobody uses them. CM Quan said they could find an alternate route for the bike lanes.
The only bright spot was when Ada Edwards noted the construction had been planned 15 years ago, there were changed demographics, and questioned the whole concept of the Spur 527 altogether.
Then Dan spoke, making the point that pedestrians have the right of way in the street when there is no sidewalk, and why would they run buses down a pedestrian walkway, but was cut off when his 3 minutes were up, and there were no questions from any CM's.
Impression of Ray and Dan: "We do not have many friends on City Council who give a patootie about the West Alabama neighborhood." |
