Houston Bicyclists Pedal to Show Support for Fallen Bicyclists |

HOUSTON -- Local cyclists paid their respects at a memorial service Tuesday for two fellow cyclists who were killed in a hit-and-run incident last Thursday night. Many bicyclists, as well as motorcyclists, attended the packed memorial service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Unity Church, 2929 Unity Drive.
Mark Maness and Grant Smith were bicyclists and motorcyclists who were killed on June 27 by a hit-and-run driver. They co-owned the Honda of Houston motorcycle dealership.
On Wednesday, July 3, bicyclists will conduct a memorial ride to the accident site at Wirt and Kingsbrook. Cyclists are expected to arrive at the accident location about 7 p.m. to place flowers at the site. The group will leave from the picnic loop at Memorial Park at 6:30 p.m. for the three-mile journey.
Houston-area bicyclists are both saddened and appalled by this senseless tragedy. These two men were "doing it right" by riding safely in single file within a marked bike lane, yet they were struck down. Many cyclists use Houston city streets for training, recreation and transportation.
The memorial ride is organized by BikeHouston, a cycling advocacy group. BikeHouston has also organized the FREEDOM RIDERS ride on Thursday July 4th starting at Fannin and Galen at 8 am. We are cycling for better bicycling and walking conditions in the city, and will remember Milan Etinski, a Baylor College of Medicine student/cyclist who was killed in a March 2002 bike crash in the Texas Medical Center, as well as Maness and Smith, by wearing black armbands.
