E-Bike Rebate Pilot Program
BikeHouston is launching an e-bike rebate pilot program to help enable access to e-bikes for more Houstonians. Thanks to an eMobility Grant from Evolve Houston, we are able to provide $400 rebates for 30 selected applicants.
This e-bike rebate pilot program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut local air pollution by accelerating the adoption of e-bikes as an everyday mode of transportation in Houston. E-bikes can be expensive — most reliable models cost over $1,000 — so this pilot program will effectively lower the upfront cost of owning an e-bike, bringing this efficient transportation option to Houstonians who might not otherwise be able to purchase an e-bike.
Because this is a pilot program with a limited amount of funding behind it, not all who apply will receive a rebate. The strongest applicants will be those who are most likely replace car trips with e-bike trips, and who may not be able to purchase an e-bike without financial assistance.
How it works
Harris County residents considering the purchase of an e-bike should fill out an online application seeking a rebate for a future e-bike purchase.
BikeHouston will review all applications received before the deadline.
Selected applicants will be notified of their approval and will receive additional instructions.
Selected applicant can purchase an e-bike from an eligible retailer.
After purchasing the bike, they provide proof of purchase to BikeHouston.
Once verified, BikeHouston issues a $400 rebate check.

Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are eligible for a rebate under this program.
What about scooters?

What about e-motos?
E-motos are not e-bikes.
Why only e-bikes? Why not regular bikes?
This rebate program is funded by an eMobility Grant from Evolve Houston intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by enabling access to electric mobility. Furthermore, the most affordable electric bikes cost significantly more than the most affordable regular bikes, warranting financial assistance. Plus, research shows that e-bikes are even more effective than regular bikes at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing trips that would have otherwise been taken by car.
Can I buy an e-bike online?
While there are many online retailers who sell high-quality e-bikes, there are also online retailers who sell cheap, low-quality e-bikes that local bike shops cannot or will not service. In order to ensure that rebates are used toward bikes that are both safe and serviceable, selected applicants must purchase their e-bike from
a brick-and-mortar retailer that operates in the eight-county Houston-Galveston region (Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties) or
Upway, our exclusive online retail partner which specializes in certified pre-owned e-bikes from reputable manufacturers.
Can I use the rebate for an e-bike I already purchased?
Past purchases are not eligible for a rebate.
Will there be more rebates in the future?
BikeHouston is working to identify more funding to extend the rebate program beyond this initial round.
This is the first I’ve heard of a financial incentive for e-bike purchases. Is this new?
E-bike incentive programs have been in use across the United States for nearly a decade. Some are locally funded (Atlanta, Austin, Denver) while others are state funded (Hawaii, Minnesota, Vermont). BikeHouston’s e-bike rebate program is the first that we know of to be funded by a nonprofit.
My company/foundation/agency would love to see this pilot program expand. How can we make that happen?
